Utah Utah
  1. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Utah's economy are more than $1 billion.
  2. Using more than 15 million tons, Utah ranks 25th in coal use.
  3. Federally owned land in Utah produced more than 23 million tons of coal in 1997.
  4. The Colorado Plateau Region (Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico) has about 40 active coal mines.
  5. Utah employs more than 1,800 miners.
  6. Utah distributes more than 25 million tons of coal each year.
  7. Utah has 13 underground mines and no surface mines.
  8. About 94% of the electricity used in Utah is produced by coal.
  9. Utah produces about 2% of the country's coal supply.
  10. Utah has five coal-fired power plants.
