Tennessee Tennessee
  1. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Tennessee's economy are more than $2 billion.
  2. Using more than 26 million tons, Tennessee ranks 15th in coal use.
  3. Tennessee has 11 underground mines and 9 surface mines.
  4. About 61% of the electricity used in Tennessee is produced by coal.
  5. The major power plants (using coal, oil, and natural gas) in Tennessee are the City of Memphis, Nashville Electric Service, Tennessee Valley Authority, City of Chattanooga, and City of Knoxville.
  6. Tennessee has seven coal-fired power plants.
