Ohio Ohio
  1. Ohio has 24 billion tons of coal reserves, or 5% of the country's reserves.
  2. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Ohio's economy are more than $8 billion.
  3. Using more than 59 million tons, Ohio ranks third in coal use.
  4. Ohio employs more than 3,000 miners.
  5. Ohio distributes more than 23 million tons of coal each year.
  6. Ohio has 9 underground mines and 51 surface mines.
  7. About 87% of the electricity used in Ohio is produced by coal.
  8. Ohio produces about 2% of the country's coal supply.
  9. Ohio has 27 coal-fired power plants.
