  1. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to North Dakota's economy are more than $500 million.

  3. North Dakota employs more than 900 miners.
  4. North Dakota distributes more than 30 million tons of coal each year.
  5. North Dakota has four surface mines and no underground mines.
  6. About 91% of the electricity used in North Dakota is produced by coal.
  7. North Dakota produces 3% of the country's coal supply.
  8. North Dakota has seven coal-fired power plants.
