  1. As plant life in the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia and North Carolina decays, new coal is being formed.
  2. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to North Carolina's economy are more than $3 billion.
  3. Using more than 27 million tons, North Carolina ranks 14th in coal use.
  4. About 62% of the electricity used in North Carolina is produced by coal.
  5. North Carolina does not currently produce coal.
  6. North Carolina has 14 coal-fired power plants.
