Montana Montana
  1. Montana has the most coal—120 billion tons of coal reserves, or 25.3% of the country's reserves.
  2. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Montana's economy are more than $700 million.
  3. Using more than 7 million tons, Montana ranks 33rd in coal use.
  4. Montana employs more than 900 miners.
  5. Montana distributes more than 41 million tons of coal each year.
  6. Montana has six surface mines and no underground mines.
  7. About 54% of the electricity used in Montana is produced by coal.
  8. Montana produces about 4% of the country's coal supply.
  9. Montana has three coal-fired power plants.
