  1. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Maryland's economy are more than $2 billion.
  2. Using more than 11 million tons, Maryland ranks 30th in coal use.
  3. Maryland has 2 underground mines and 14 surface mines.
  4. About 57% of the electricity used in Maryland is produced by coal.
  5. Maryland produces about 3% of the country's coal supply.
  6. Maryland has seven coal-fired power plants.
