  1. Kentucky has 29 billion tons of coal reserves, or 6.1% of the country's reserves.
  2. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Kentucky's economy are more than $12 billion.
  3. Using more than 40 million tons, Kentucky ranks sixth in coal use.
  4. Kentucky employs more than 17,200 miners.
  5. Kentucky distributes more than 138 million tons of coal each year.
  6. Kentucky has 246 underground mines and 162 surface mines.
  7. About 97% of the electricity used in Kentucky is produced by coal.
  8. Kentucky produces about 13% of the country's coal supply.
  9. Kentucky has 22 coal-fired power plants.
