Kansas The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Kansas' economy are more than $1 billion. Using more than 19 million tons, Kansas ranks 21st in coal use. Kansas has one surface mine and no underground mines. About 71% of the electricity used in Kansas is produced by coal. Kansas produces about 0.04% of the country's coal supply.
