  1. Indiana has 10 billion tons of coal reserves, or 2.1% of the country's reserves.
  2. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Indiana's economy are more than $4 billion.
  3. Using more than 63 million tons, Indiana ranks second in coal use.
  4. Indiana employs more than 2,600 miners.
  5. Indiana distributes more than 34 million tons of coal each year.
  6. Indiana has 5 underground mines and 25 surface mines.
  7. About 95% of the electricity used in Indiana is produced by coal.
  8. Indiana produces about 3% of the country's coal supply.
  9. Indiana has 24 coal-fired power plants.
