  1. Illinois has 78 billion tons of coal reserves, or 16.5% of the country's reserves.
  2. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Illinois' economy are more than $8 billion.
  3. Using more than 44 million tons, Illinois ranks fifth in coal use.
  4. Illinois employs more than 4,300 miners.
  5. Illinois distributes more than 40 million tons of coal each year.
  6. Illinois has 12 underground mines and 6 surface mines.
  7. About 45% of the electricity used in Illinois is produced by coal.
  8. Illinois produces about 4% of the country's coal supply.
  9. Illinois has 24 coal-fired power plants.
