Arizona Arizona
  1. The Black Mesa, the only currently operating coal slurry pipeline, moves coal from a mine in Arizona to a power plant in Nevada.
  2. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Arizona's economy are more than $2 billion.
  3. Using more than 16 million tons, Arizona ranks 23rd in coal use.
  4. Arizona employs more than 700 miners.
  5. Arizona distributes more than 12 million tons of coal each year.
  6. Arizona has two surface mines and no underground mines.
  7. About 46% of the electricity used in Arizona is produced by coal.
  8. Arizona produces about 1% of the country's coal supply.
  9. Arizona has six coal-fired power plants.
