  1. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Alabama's economy are more than $4 billion.
  2. Using more than 37 million tons, Alabama ranks seventh in coal use.
  3. Alabama employs more than 4,100 miners.
  4. Alabama distributes more than 19 million tons of coal each year.
  5. Alabama has 9 underground mines and 33 surface mines.
  6. About 61% of the electricity used in Alabama is produced by coal.
  7. Alabama produces about 2% of the country's coal supply.
  8. Alabama has nine coal-fired power plants.
