Alaska Alaska
  1. Alaska ranks first in mining wages. Miners here earn about $86,400 per year.
  2. The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Alaska's economy are more than $200 million.
  3. Using more than 700,000 tons, Alaska ranks 45th in coal use.
  4. Alaska has one surface mine and no underground mines.
